To propose to Kourtney Kardashian, Travis Barker organised thousands of red roses to be arranged in a giant heart-shape on a beach in Montecito. Similarly in 2021, Michael Polansky sent an entire bush of white roses to Lady Gaga in Rome for her 35th birthday. The traditional rose certainly has a place in extravagant romantic gestures but according to Edward West, Company Director at Poho Flowers, there are many more ways to say “I love you”, with flowers.

Perhaps more than ever before, February 14 is not only an occasion for couples, but an opportunity to celebrate family, friendships and self-love. Reflective of our modern relationships – which are so often unconventional, complicated and quirky – West tells GRAZIA that florals have shifted from traditional bouquet’s to something “more eclectic”.

“[We’re] paying homage to both what is seasonally relevant, currently hydrangeas and dahlias, whilst still honouring the historical symbol of love, roses,” West says.

“Whilst red roses are synonymous with expressing passionate, deep love, there are many other flowers to choose from that express affection,” the cult florist muses. “Similar to the rose, the Orchid has long been an emblem for elegance, passion and admiration because of its own sculptural-like presence. Or, for example, it is little known that hydrangeas symblolise a togetherness, unity, and harmony, due to the abundant number of flowers blooming on the singular stalk. There are more ways than one to say ‘I love you’ with flowers.”

When it comes to the all important aesthetic, West also notes that while “opulent” jewel tones like burgundy and red are popular, demand is growing for more soft, pastel colours.
