At the 78th Golden Globes, Netflix series The Crown is leading the winners list (for the full list, visit here). In 2021 season four of the popular drama series followed Princess Diana and her demise at the hands of the British press and Royal Family. Out of six nominations, the series has nabbed four wins across Best TV Series, Drama, Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Best Actress and Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama.

It comes as no surprise that Emma Corrin took out Best Actress for her performance as Princess Diana while her co-star, Josh O’Connor was honoured as Best Actor for his portayal of Prince Charles. Gillian Anderson who plays British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also won Best Supporting Actress.

O’Connor wore a slick suit from Loewe to accept his award and paid tribute to Corrin in a heartfelt speech. The English actor also recognised that many people are still stuck in lockdown and touched on the importance of mental health during this time.

“Wow that’s quite a surprise. Thank you so much to everyone who makes The Crown what it is. I’ve had the time of my life making this show,” O’Connor says. He continued, “To Emma Corrin, best actress winner, you’re extraordinary, talented, funny and brilliant player of rock paper scissors. I love you to bits.”

“I’m very lucky to be able to work in this period and there are so many people who are unable to work and are alone and isolated,” he said. “And I hope that we can all collectively put mental health at the forefront of our mind. Thank you so much.”

The Crown is also leading the nominations for the 2021 Critics Choice Awards. If anything, its success on the awards trail proves that our obsession with the Royal Family is alive and well, particularly in modern times.

On the same day a first look at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah has been shared. In a 30-second teaser, the Duke echoes past comments saying, “My biggest concern was history repeating itself.” The fourth season of The Crown is based on this very sentiment.

The history of Princess Diana will also be presented in a feature-length film starring Kristen Stewart.
