Over the weekend, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, became a father for the fourth time.

The Dubai royal welcomed his second child with his wife, Sheikha Sheikha bint Saeed bin Thani Al Maktoum – a baby girl named Sheikha Hind bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. The couple are already parents to two-year-old Mohammed, who they welcomed in February 2023.

The Crown Prince of Dubai became a father for the first time in 2021, welcoming twins Rashid and Shaikha.

To mark the arrival of his newborn daughter, Sheikh Hamdan, affectionately called Fazza to his close family and friends, took to Instagram to share the joyous news and introduced his newborn baby daughter’s name, Sheikha Hind.

“Alhamdulillah for the blessing and the completion of grace. By the will of Allah, our daughter was born: Hind bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum,” the announcement read.

And it appears the moniker of the newborn Emirati princess holds quite the family legacy.

What is the meaning of “Hind”?

Conventionally, choosing a name (known as “tasmiyah”) is one of the most important events in the baby’s life. A name with many generous meanings, “Hind” can mean abundance, grace, and gentleness.

The name “Hind” also has a history in the Arab world. In pre-Islamic Arabia, the name was often associated with beauty and nobility, typically symbolising power and high status. When translated, its literal meaning is “a hundred camels,” which in olden times, camels and wealth came together synonymously.

Throughout its history, the name links back to one of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) wives, whose first name was also Hind. Thus, it is quite a central name in the religion and region.

In Arab tradition, names are typically passed down as a symbol of heritage. With Sheikh Hamdan’s daughter’s name, it pays homage to his mother, the always influential Her Highness Hind bint Maktoum Al Maktoum, the first wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is known for her numerous charitable and philanthropic work.
