If anyone had a tough act to follow at the Met Gala this year, it was Kim Kardashian. The public figure dominated headlines at last year’s fundraising event after borrowing a historic dress (you know, the one Marilyn Monroe wore during the “Happy Birthday” performance for former US President John F Kennedy).
As daunting of a task as this might seem, Kim Kardashian arrived at the 2023 Met Gala unworried about living up to her own hype. “This year, I just wanted to feel glamorous,” she said in an interview, “I really didn’t feel the pressure. I just wanted to have a good time.”
The star donned a stunning Schiaparelli dress designed by Daniel Roseberry, with an elegantly oversized coat that rested on her shoulders. Layers upon layers of authentic pearls were draped over her dress, as an ode to Karl Lagerfeld‘s designs for Chanel.
During an interview, Kardashian revealed that these pearls were the first thing that came to mind when she first caught wind of the Met Gala 2023 theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
“I thought, ‘What is more Karl?’ The iconic Chanel pearls are what I always thought of, so we wanted to just be dripping in pearls,” said Kardashian. Roseberry executed this concept by creating a halter breastplate for the dress that evoked Chanel’s signature pearl necklaces.
“Some popped on the way,” Kardashian revealed, “and I told my daughter to grab them all–they’re real pearls–and she was putting them all in her purse.” The mother of four brought her eldest daughter, North West, to the event. However, she was absent from the red carpet and watching her famous mom from the safety of their car. Likely, counting up her new collection of pearls.
