Australian actress Margot Robbie shuffled and tottered her way into the world premiere of the Greta Gerwig-directed film Barbie in Los Angeles on July 9. After weeks of pink-themed press (in Sydney, Seoul, and Mexico), the 33-year-old Academy Award-winning nominee shocked onlookers with her black gown.
A custom design by Schiaparelli paid homage to “Solo In The Spotlight” Barbie, a Mattel creation from 1960. Back then, young girls and boys flocked to stores to purchase the sequinned look—which came complete with a microphone stand. With her strapless black gown, pink chiffon scarf, four-strand crystal choker necklace and black open-toed heels, this Barbie would go on to become one of the most famous in the world, much like Robbie herself.
Robbie’s new stylist Andrew Mukamal worked with the French House to recreate the doll. A single red rosette, just like the original, sat atop a voluminous tulle hem. Robbie and Mukamal layered the look with long black opera gloves, a pair of Manolo Blahniks, and jewels from Lorraine Schwartz.
Mukamal has created a Barbie-sized splash on the world press tour by diving deep into the storied Barbie archives, and then enlisting Versace, Chanel, Moschino, and Hervé Léger to recreate the famous doll’s minis and pantsuits.
We just cannot imagine any actress more perfect for this spotlight than Robbie.
