You – and your hair – can thank us later.

What’s the biggest mistake you see women making with their hair colour?
When women highlight or bleach their hair every six weeks. Any layering of colour is so damaging. Instead, you should try to leave your colour as long as possible. We find the sweet spot is about four months when then there are more roots. This makes it less likely that we overlap colour whilst also giving us more space to make improvements so you can see a better transformation.

What’s the best way to wash and style coloured hair?
I always suggest a sulfate-free shampoo and a mask or conditioner with the right amount of moisture and protein to keep the hair cuticles sealed. When it’s possible, it’s best to stay away from high-heat tools like tongs and straighteners and choose to blowdry more as the heat is cooler.

Help! We have hard water, chlorine, the sun and sea to contend with. What’s the best way to protect colour against the elements?
I always encourage my clients to use an at-home clarifying cleansing shampoo to remove any metals and chlorine buildup. We love Redken’s acidic bonding products as they’re great for sealing cuticles, also Oribe Shampoos and Conditioners have UV protection – their beautiful colour range has the most UV protection. Always try to avoid chlorine, especially blondes. Having a colour gloss at the salon will also help seal the cuticles and keep your shine.

What’s the biggest challenge you face as a hair colourist?
Clients that come to me with permanent colour in their hair. I never recommend permanent hair colour as it never leaves your hair and can affect the condition and future colour negatively. Colour is a long-term investment, and you should allow six to eight months before you see the full effects of the colour.

You will need to leave your roots longer between appointments so we have more roots to work with and you will see a better result. If the colour isn’t too overdone we can sometimes try to remove the buildup with our metal detox treatment

So, how often should we be colouring our hair?
This depends on your natural base colour, but if you have no greys, ideally you would come three times a year. For women with greys, this would vary, but I would still recommend only touching the roots in between the three annual appointments.

Debunk the biggest hair colour myth you’ve heard.
That you can use toners to cover orange bleach or ash toners to warm colours. This approach doesn’t work in the long term and leaves residue in the hair which often turns green or red!

What advice would you give someone who wants to switch up their hair colour?
Consultations are key. Don’t feel bad taking advantage of complimentary consultations. You know when it feels right with a hairdresser. Also, go prepared with reference images, this is important so you and your colourist have the same vision in mind.

Are there any DIY remedies that actually work?
Coloured hair is very sensitive to natural products and oils. Whilst they might be great and revitalising for uncoloured hair, it isn’t recommended to use anything on coloured hair as it can react with the chemicals.

Is there one hair colour trend you wish you could banish forever?
Cold ashy/grey toners – they don’t compliment any skin tone

What do you think will be big in the hair colour world in the next year?
Glossy and rich tones.

What are three hair products you’ll always have with you?
A pin tail comb for super fine highlights.
A heat protector to use before styling.
A serum for finishing. I love the Oribe Super Shine.

What’s your ultimate hair tip?
Patience. Sometimes to get out of your current hair situation you need to invest time. It doesn’t always happen with the first colour, but everything is possible with time.

Who has the best hair in the world?
I love Rosie Huntingdon Whiteley’s colour. It always looks in great condition.

Whose hair would you love to give a makeover to?
Charlize Theron. Not that she needs it, but she always suits everything she tries.
