Kristen Stewart is an undisputed veteran on the red carpet, having landed at the top of best dressed lists for more than a decade. But her latest ensemble for a screening of Spencer, an upcoming biopic based on the late Princess Diana’s life, might just be one of her most show-stopping to date.

Dressed in a Chanel two-piece gown, Stewart brought her signature edgy aesthetic to the red carpet. With a midriff-baring crop top and floor-length tiered skirt with sheer panels, Stewart’s look took traditionally ladylike accoutrements – lace, bows, ruffles – in a bold direction, fit for a punk princess.

She continued the tough-pretty theme with her hair and makeup, with deep burgundy eyeshadow and a tousled up-do that tumbled in loose waves down the side of her face.

As a long-term ambassador for Chanel, it’s hardly surprising to see Stewart outfitted by the the French luxury house. But Chanel also reimagined one of Princess Diana’s most memorable outfits for the film, an ivory ballgown that Stewart wears in a promotional poster for the movie.

“The Chanel Couture dress she wears, that one was an old one that came from the archives,” director Pablo Larraín told Entertainment Tonight of the custom 1988 mermaid dress. “We wanted to work with it but they didn’t allow us to use it because it was from the archives, but they did a new one for us and if you look at it, it’s really beautiful what they did.”

It turned out to be a favourite for Stewart. “It’s my favorite look in the movie and it’s hard to say something like that because it is just top to bottom a very, very beautiful costumed film,” she told the publication.

“But this is like Chanel couture deconstructed to the max. Like Diana doesn’t actually end up in the dinner she is supposed to in that dress, she ends up in the bathroom in a bit of a heap.”

We can’t wait for more incredible style moments from the Spencer promo trail, both on-screen and off.
