Y2K beauty trends are all the rage right now, driven by TikTok and our collective appreciation for late 90s, early 00s nostalgia. Celebrities are loving the throwback aesthetic too, led by the likes of Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and Bella Hadid.

Hadid is perhaps the biggest proponent of Noughties-era attire, having rocked everything from baggy cargo pants to Ed Hardy tees. From a beauty perspective, she’s dabbled in zig-zag parts, butterfly clips and razor-thin brows, but her latest infatuation is the spiky top knot.

Characterised by a high bun with an ultra-sleek finish, the spiky top knot has gained rapid popularity amongst Hadid and her fellow Noughties enthusiasts in recent months, including Rodrigo, who wore a sophisticated iteration for her first turn on the Met Gala red carpet last month.

Even Kristen Stewart isn’t immune to the appeal of the low-key spiked top knot, opting for a looser, messier version to sit front row at the Chanel Spring/Summer 2022 show. Her style was less structured than Rodrigo’s look, with a side-swept part and tumbling tendrils falling haphazardly from the curled up-do piled at the top of her head.

We even saw spiky top knots on the runway, with designer of the moment Nensi Dojaka sending models down the catwalk at London Fashion Week with punked-up ballerina buns, subsequently cementing the style as the hottest look of the season.

Thankfully, TikTok has been forthcoming with spiky top knot hair tutorials, with creators offering simple step-by-step how-to videos that demonstrate just how easy it is to achieve.

The general consensus is to begin by parting the hair sharply down the middle, securing it into a neat ponytail with an elastic towards the top of the head. Next the sides are made sleek, using either a spoolie or brush lacquered with hair spray or clear gel to smooth fly-aways into submission.

The lengths of the hair are then twisted together and looped around the ponytail, with the ends pinned or tucked through the front of the hair elastic and left loose to fan out around the bun in spikes. How the ends are styled comes down to personal preference, with some preferring straight spikes and others preferring to curl the ends into tight, springy ringlets.

You can choose to leave the front sections of the hair secured, or you can pull out a few pieces to frame the sides of the face, as preferred by Hadid.

A quick spritz of hairspray will hold everything in place, and you’re done! Shop GRAZIA‘s spiky top knot essentials below.
