Home to 200 pavilions, Expo 2020 Dubai has intertwined innovation, sustainability, and empowerment into its exhibitions. But this one pavilion has taken upon itself to be a hub for women empowerment.

The Women’s Pavilion, in collaboration with Cartier, is an immersive journey through the history and future of women worldwide. Located in the sustainability district, the pavilion’s exterior is exquisite, decorated with geometrical shapes that allow light to pass through. When you enter the pavilion, you’re greeted by a wooden interior that prompts you to think of “New Perspectives.” A whole wall of the main entrance hall is dedicated to emphasise the “fundamental principle: when women thrive, humanity thrives.”

In the next room of the exhibit, after we watch a three-minute excerpt detailing the creation of the immersive pavilion, we are welcomed into a dimly lit room decorated with twinkling lights. Adorned on the walls are women of all ages categorised into how they have shaped history. Different sections of the room are dedicated to women in power, education, arts, sports, and historical figures. Some notable mentions include: HH Sheikha Fatima and her role in women’s education in the UAE, the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, famous architect Zaha Hadid and renowned artist Frida Kahlo.

A notable installation is a wall of multiple women’s shoes. All placed on a shelf to depict how while global poverty has decreased 75%, women are still more likely to be in poverty than men. In addition, women spend three times longer on ‘unpaid care work’ than men, 4.1 hours more a day to be specific.

The ‘New Perspectives’ exhibit plays a vital role in celebrating and showcasing women’s impact on the world. In the center of this room is an enormous tree, signifying growth. Around the walls, interactive exhibits are dedicated to women who played a vital role in Covid 19 pandemic, an Instagram art installation devoted to women supporting women, and many other fascinating pieces.

The last room in this pavilion is an immersive journey designed by actress and director Melanie Laurent, best known for the film Now You See Me. Laurent takes us inside two rooms, a ‘Forest of Voices’ and a VR cloud simulator.
