Only Gwyneth Paltrow would be wearing Gucci when her now-husband Brad Falchuk unexpectedly proposed to her in Italy in 2017. In a new video, the 50-year-old Academy Award-winning actress and Goop founder rifles through her wardrobe – a treasure trove filled with sartorial hallmarks of her career and personal life. But it’s the floral silk mini with a Peter Pan collar and ruffles down its front that will garner the most interest.
“This is the dress I was wearing when Brad proposed to me,” Paltrow tells the camera, pulling out the Gucci. “Actually, we were in Italy, climbed up to a roof deck thing, and he surprised me!”
At the time of her wedding in 2018, Paltrow opened up about finding love again after her split from her first husband, Chris Martin.
“Personally, at midlife, I have tried to accept how complex romantic love can be,” Paltrow said in a 2018 digital cover story for Goop. “I have decided to give it a go again, not only because I believe I have found the man I was meant to be with, but because I have accepted the soul-stretching, pattern-breaking opportunities that (terrifyingly) are made possible by intimacy.”
Paltrow, who has a penchant for sustainability and no issue with re-wearing her designer wares, wore this dress again in New York that same year.
“I pull things from this closet once in a while,” Paltrow says. “It’s really if I want something special, or I’m saving for myself or if things come back in style or for [my daughter] Apple. I’ve saved a lot of shoes for Apple.”
The shoes in Paltrow’s closet include the Manolo Blahniks she wore when she won the Oscar in 1999 for her performance in Shakespeare In Love and a pair of Gucci heels, the first in the Tom Ford era. As you watch the video below, you will see another Gucci piece from Ford’s days at the House, a red suit which Paltrow confesses to wearing repeatedly.

Apple, 18, made her fashion debut with Chanel last week, sitting in the front row at the House’s Spring/Summer 2023 Haute Couture show.

The actress also pulls out a Calvin Klein dress she wore to the New York film premiere of The Pallbearer with Brad Pitt (to whom she also became engaged) in 1996.
“I wore this to a premiere when I was going out with Brad Pitt. It’s very 90s shirt dress kind of thing. It’s like slouchy; it’s relaxed. It’s giving that very 90s ‘I don’t give a f*ck’.”

Of the big romantic relationships in her life, Paltrow has said in the past, she has dated two types of men.
“One where I was constantly chasing and trying to win someone over, and one where I was put off by the person’s capacity for the relationship — and those relationships were very short-lived,” she says.
“For the first time [with Brad Falchuk], I feel like I’m in an adult relationship that is sometimes very uncomfortable — because he sort of demands a certain level of intimacy and communication that I haven’t been held to before.”
