Rumours have stirred online that Gabriela Hearst will be stepping down as the creative director of Chloé. Gabriela has maintained the position since 2020 and in her three-year tenure, she transformed Chloé into an innovative and eco-conscious brand for the modern woman.

What will it mean for Chloé when Gabriela Hearst officially bids the house adieu?

Sustainable Motions at Chloé will continue

Launching a resale market under Chloé was just one of the ways that Gabriela Hearst reformed Chloé’s green policies. The creative director boosted Chloé’s sustainability measures in a meaningful way throughout her tenure, and the brand became the first luxury label to attain a B Corp Certification. Earning this designation was a massive achievement for the French fashion brand and, to maintain its standing, the next creative director will have to honour the performance requirements held by B Corp’s Standards Advisory Council.

Chloé must select a new creative director

No one at the Richemont-owned fashion house has disclosed who might be replacing Gabriela as creative director, but Chloé’s new creative director will have big shoes to fill after Gabriela Hearst. Her background in sustainability and a sharp eye for elegant designs made her a strong choice as the successor to Natacha Ramsay-Levi in 2020. The next designer to reinvigorate the brand enters a lengthy line of successful designers who have directed the French label, including Phoebe Philo, Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney.

What’s Next For Gabriela Hearst?

Prior to assuming the role as Chloé’s creative director, Gabriela launched a namesake fashion label in 2015 and will shift her focus solely toward her own label once she departs from the French maison. Her final collection as Chloé’s creative director will launch in spring/summer 2024 during Paris Fashion Week, following the release of her collaboration with Angelina Jolie: Chloé x Atelier Jolie.

News of the collaboration arrived on the same day that whispers of Gabriela’s departure reached the public. “The Chloé x Atelier Jolie capsule collection is an exploration of modern femininity that pays tribute to the power of female-led collaboration,” the brand wrote in its official statement. The eco-ethical collection will consist of upcycled materials and highlight the work of craftsmen from a Fairtrade enterprise. Not only is the Chloé x Atelier Jolie an exciting capsule collection, but it’s also a testament to the concerted efforts Gabriela made toward sustainability during her time at the house.
