Dior dazzled onlookers on Thursday at its Autumn 2023 collection debut at the Gateway of India in Mumbai. The French fashion house turned the historic monument into a runway for the evening, unveiling the 99 new styles in its latest collection. This destination was a considered choice for Dior’s artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, who conveyed her appreciation for India and its heritage of fine craftsmanship through the embroidered styles in the collection.

The refined silhouettes in Dior’s Autumn 2023 collection ranged from midi dresses to traditional kurta-inspired sets in breathtaking shades of blue, pink, yellow, and green. Chiuri exercised her expert styling technique to create looks that were rich with layering pieces, like embroidered jackets and coats. Each piece in the collection communicated with one another and contributed to the dazzling conversation between the House’s style codes and traditional Indian design.
Chiuri entrusted her longtime friend and the director of the Chanakya ateliers and the Chanakya School of Craft, Karishma Swali, to collaborate on the collection and the Toran staged at the Gateway of India for Dior’s Autumn 2023 show. “Seen as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India, the Gateway and the Toran serve as a metaphor for this intimate collaboration, referencing cross-cultural influences, heritage and traditions,” said Chiuri.
Swali and Chiuri’s relationship stemmed from a shared appreciation for handmade luxury goods and quality craftsmanship. Dior’s Autumn 2023 collection debut is a hallmark moment not just for them, but for the Christian Dior brand as a whole as it solidifies its growing relationship with this regional market.
