Oh, clogs, you continue to surprise me.
It feels like you are the one shoe that no matter how many laps the fashion cycle runs, you often circle back, leaving me in complete confusion. There either that one shoe that you love or loather, and I find myself in the middle, easing toward the loather side (probably because they low-key remind me of crocs and anything up that ally is an extreme no-no for me.) But the shoe itself comes from a centuries-worth of history, including everything from rockstars to agriculture and runway debuts.
The sculptured shoe made from wood first sparked the fashion scene around the 15th-century in Europe, where they became an iconic symbol from Denmark to the Netherlands, Germany and France. Even in the 1920s, we saw the average New Yorker opting for an elegant and easy slip-on shoe in a unique colourway for the summer.
In the early ’70s, there was a massive fashion wave of style icons from models, actresses to actors wearing a pair of chic clogs. You would find them paired with bell-bottom jeans, a-line pleated skirts and statement dresses. Slowly after that, clogs became a way of life.
As we approached the 90’s, they were everyone. On the fashion runway, luxury fashion brands like Gucci, Chanel and Dior, had clogs showcased all across the runway. The most prominent luxury fashion house added its signature twist from buckles to prints and fur, making it the go-to shoe of the season.
Now at the turn of the millennials, we’ve seen an occasional appearance, but according to Hermès‘ Spring/Summer 2021 Show, the luxury brand’s ‘Calya’ mules, designed by Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski, followed every look and officially brought the signature clogs back to life. So, the real question is, where will you get yours?
