The upcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde is set to be one of the biggest film releases of the year with early rave reviews and a lengthy standing ovation at Venice Film Festival. After appearing at the lavish event last week, the movie’s leading lady Ana De Armas has returned to the US for the Los Angeles premiere.

If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, sequins must be a close second. The Cuban-born actress walked the red carpet at the TCL Chinese Theatre wearing a gold sequinned gown by Louis Vuitton with a halter neckline, low back and short train. The dress seemingly pays homage to Monroe in her iconic gold gown from the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

At the Venice Film Festival, de Armas wore a pleated pink halter neck gown from Louis Vuitton. She was brought to tears following the world premiere when she was honoured with a 14-minute standing ovation.

Blonde is written and directed by Andrew Dominik and is based on the Joyce Carol Oates’ bestselling novel of the same name. It will explore the “complicated life” of the Hollywood star and despite a controversial NC-17 rating (which for Australian’s translates to R18+) Monroe’s estate have expressed their full support of the film.

“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history,” Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate, said in a statement to Variety. “Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”

Blonde will release onto Netflix from September 23.
