Ana de Armas has arrived at the 2023 Golden Globe awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. In a long black, Louis Vuitton gown – with structured, strapless bustier a la a modern take on Marilyn Monroe’s screen siren style – and with embellishments down its front, the 34-year-old Cuban actress is tonight nominated for Best Actress in the drama category for her provocative performance as Monroe in Blonde.
De Armas will go up against Cate Blanchett for TÁR, Olivia Colman for Empire of Light, Viola Davis for The Woman King, and Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans. Blonde did not receive a standalone nomination.
Despite initial controversy around the casting of de Armas, Monroe’s estate released a statement pledging full support of the decision.
“Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety,” a statement from Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate read.
It took LV artisans 150 hours to make de Armas’ gown for this evening. Twenty-five metres of silk were required for the back and 800 sequins were used for the embroidery.
Blonde is streaming now on Netflix.
