Julia Fox and fashion now go hand-in-hand, but it wasn’t always that way. Prior to her catapult into the global zeitgeist thanks to a brief but momentous relationship with Kanye West, Fox was a celebrity, but nowhere near as ubiquitous a name as she is now.
It seemed like Julia Fox was following in the footsteps of Kim Kardashian – a woman in West’s world who he enjoyed styling, often in tandem with whatever his own fashion preferences were at the time. In this way, it seemed like Fox’s style was just an extension of West’s – but when the couple split up in February (with Fox telling the world she only dated the rap artist to “give people something to talk about” and “get him off Kim’s case”), we experienced the full force of her style evolution.
Much like Kim Kardashian post-West, Fox isn’t going to let a man define her style. Often controversial, always out-of-the-box, she continues to surprise us with new and innovative, DGAF fashion choices.
Here, we take a look at the actor’s tumultuous style evolution that began in 2022 and continues to go from strength to strength.
2019
Prior to her relationship with Kanye West, Julia Fox did attend events – but her style was far more demure and, we assume, more dictated by stylists and the Hollywood machine than by her own preferences.
2022
They were only officially together for a month, but Julia Fox and Kanye West made plenty of bold fashion statements in such a short space of time. Arriving at the Kenzo fall 2022 menswear show in couple-dressing Canadian tuxedos (ahem, Britney and Justin anyone?), Fox wore Schiaparelli on top, with Carhartt jeans she actually asked Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry for – he was literally wearing them when she visited his showroom.
This was the first appearance of Fox’s signature heavy black liner look, too.
For a night at Rick Owens and Michèle Lamy’s house in Paris later that evening, Fox wore Rick Owens with silver, thigh-high Balenciaga boots previously worn by Kim Kardashian in 2016, which felt just a little awkward but very much in line with Fox’s DGAF attitude.
For the Schiaparelli Paris Fashion Week show, the couple donned all-black ensembles, Fox’s peppered with Roseberry’s iconic lock bag and heavy gold jewellery.
After those Fashion Week appearances, Fox was a household name – not just because we all wanted to know more about this new woman in Kanye West’s life, but because she herself had made a splash sartorially, and everyone was intrigued. After splitting from West, Fox was very much top of every event invite list and when she did appear on red carpets, continued to rebel against the minimalism expected of rising stars.
Here at the Independent Spirit Awards in March 2022, the actress wore LA label No Sesso, taking cut-out dresses to new heights and once again proving that even if you can’t do liquid liner without turning into a raccoon, you can still make it fashion.
Out in LA the following week, Fox was snapped in an all-leather look with denim knee-high boots and a shoulder bag made of old jeans, continuing the aesthetic she introduced to the world at Paris Fashion Week.
By May 2022, Fox had cemented her status as both the DIY queen of the fashion world, and the most chaotic style icon of our times. This denim blazer over some underwear? With the same knee-high boots and old-jeans tote? Incredible. Although, it’s “not underwear, it’s bodywear,” according to Alexander Wang, who was behind the appearance as promotion for a new collection.
Still, not many in the fashion world could have pulled this off. Let’s be honest, she really ate.
By the end of 2022 Julia Fox was carving her niche in the fashion world, often snapped by paparazzi out in New York wearing either outrageously daring outfits, or wearing a form of what she called “dominatrix couture,” or just something simple (but still usually black) like these parachute pants and tank while taking her son Valentino out to the park.
2023
Speaking of Valentino, Fox brought him along to the Diesel show at Milan Fashion Week in early 2022, and he practically stole the show in tiny, toddler cowboy boots and a Canadian tuxedo look of his own. Fox, meanwhile, began her foray into low-slung Y2K denim – she really could have pulled these jeans out of our high school stash.
Later that evening Fox wore another Diesel creation, except this time she fashioned the top herself out of several of the brand’s belts, strapped across her bust.
It’s this kind of creativity and push against unspoken fashion rules that have turned Julia Fox into such an interesting face in fashion. She is really out here influencing the style world via 100 per cent individuality, no matter what others may think.
At Paris Fashion Week in 2023, Fox made her return to the City of Love, sans Kanye West, and proved that in just over a year she had risen to the top of the attendance list. At Courrèges Womenswear Fall Winter 2023-2024 show, she wore a sheer, form-fitting dress by the fashion house, teamed with a leather motorcycle jacket sans body.
Speaking at the event, she said “Confidence is funny because nobody knows if it’s real or not. Just don’t overthink it. Nobody cares as much as you think they do.” A statement that defines Fox’s style and individuality, really.
