For a mere two months in 2022, the zeitgeist was captivated by the whirlwind romance between Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Julia Fox. Though, as quick as their romance started—with a Miami fling over New Year’s Eve—it was over.
Now, the Uncut Gems breakout star has divulged in her new memoir, Down The Drain, her perspective on the short-lived relationship. Describing their tryst as a “sick, twisted game”, Fox detailed exactly what led to their demise, including the supposed role Kim Kardashian played in their breakup.
In the book, Fox alleges that West brought up Kardashian during their final phone call, writing: “He tells me he had a good conversation with his soon-to-be-ex-wife and discovered a lot of information about me.” West, who is never referred to by name in the memoir, only as ‘the artist’, allegedly then weaponised Fox’s history of drug addiction and abuse against her, claiming that he didn’t know about her past with narcotics and that she “duped” him.
Fox infers that West discovered her history as a drug addict from Kardashian, though she disputes this. Fox alleges that she responded to West by shouting, “I told you! Maybe if you listened more. And not to mention, so were you!” claiming that West himself suffered from narcotic abuse.
Fox continued, alleging West “remains silent for once.” “You said you wouldn’t embarrass me,” she claims he said to her, before adding, “I refuse to let him hear me crying, so I hang up and tell my publicist to inform the press that we are over.”
Fox also details several of the pair’s most highly visible moments of their relationship from her perspective.
This includes the night West took her into a bathroom at Carbone in New York for an impromptu styling session—which Fox described to Interview at the time as a “real life Cinderella moment”—and her birthday party where West bought her and all her friends Hermès Birkin bags. On the latter, Fox wrote the images from the evening were forced, claiming she felt like they “pose[d] like puppets.”
“I question his true intentions, feeling that this grand gesture is nothing more than a publicity stunt,” she claims. Though Fox and West’s relationship certainly helped catapult the former dominatrix to a higher level of public interest, she also rebukes claims that Kim Kardashian has been copying her eclectic style.
During a sit down with Vanity Fair for their “Lie Detector” video series, Fox claims that she’s “inspired” by Kardashian, adding that she “actually really loves her”.
“I grew up watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians and I actually liked it before they were even cool,” the model and podcaster continued. “And when people would bash her I would always go to bat for her. She is a multi-talented queen.”
When asked whether she thought Kardashian was inspired by her in any way, Fox noted that “there have been some looks that are a little similar”. “But I feel like, you know, it’s just what’s trending,” she added. “I don’t know if I’m on her mood board or anything like that.”
