Hailey Bieber is no stranger to a 90s style trend. We’ve seen the model champion a number of looks that defined the era, which ran the gamut from grunge to high-octane glamour. But now Bieber has taken her sartorial devotion to the decade one step further by zeroing in on one very distinctive aesthetic – 90s popstars.
While there’s a clearly visible spectrum when it comes to such a polarising period of time (theres no redeeming those *NSYNC-style puffy coats), there are a few ensembles that have endured the ages. And if her recent style turns are any indication, Bieber is clearly mining the pop songstresses of the era for inspiration.
Take her latest Instagram look: an unbuttoned denim overshirt from The Attico, a pink Jacquemus bandeau bra, layered gold necklaces, and the pièce de résistance of any singer who once wore a pigtails on stage – extremely baggy hot pink pants. In Bieber’s case? Balenciaga sweats, which were made to feel even more girl group thanks to the reflective Acne Studios bucket hat and Nike AirForce 1s.
Her penchant for a bare midriff is reminiscent of the most celebrated stars of the time, including Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey. She even wore a denim all-in-one, in an obvious nod to the undisputed queen of custom jean couture, Britney Spears.
She also regularly opts for chunky grunge-style knits and plaid shirts (perhaps stolen from husband Justin Bieber, who it appears has quite the collection of Raf Simons button-ups).
Bieber has also channelled some of the biggest R’nB icons in recent outfits, exhibiting the oversized layering prowess of Salt-N-Pepa, Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child with just-a-little-too-big sportswear, like this vintage Nike jacket, crop top and shorts combo.
