Christopher Esber is really having his moment in the sun. While Australian girls have been wearing his deconstructed designs and perfect tailoring for a decade (this fashion editor included), the last six months have seen the Sydney-based designer find a different kind of spotlight: celebrity. Enter Hailey Bieber and friends.

It feels like just about everyone has been spotted in his now famous cutaway dresses and impeccable (and impossibly flattering) tailoring. Solange Knowles wore Esber’s diamanté-crusted, cut-out blazer and pant (arguably the star of his Resort 20 collection) at the Golden Oasis Piaget event last July. Elsa Hosk first suited up his Double Belted Wool Trouser and matching Blazer attending an event in Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, then last week wore the designer’s Underwire Crop and Ruched Cocoon Skirt for a photoshoot. Emily Ratajkowski is also a repeat offender; first wearing Esber’s Loophole Tie Skirt and Cropped Shirt in a Kerastase campaign, then the very scant Cross Bandeau Tie Dress on a night out (both outfits making a very strong case for abdominal work).

But it was Zendaya who really put Christopher Esber on the Hollywood map: wearing Esber to both the People’s Choice Awards last November and the AAA Art Awards in January, all thanks to her stylist, the inimitable Law Roach (who penned an exclusive essay for GRAZIA’s Reinvention Issue).

But there’s a particular dress that has really caught the gaze of Hollywood’s It-girls: the Ruched Disconnect Shirt Dress. Featuring that now signature cutaway, the dress was first spotted on the svelte hips of Victoria’s Secret alum, Candice Swanepoel, who wore it in white last November.
Then British songstress Dua Lipa donned the black version a month later, looking as sultry as ever while posing on a staircase (as you do).
And now the dress has found its way to the tiny tummy of Hailey Bieber, who shared a photo of herself in the white dress on Instagram Story (along with another hotly coveted item: Bottega Veneta’s Chain Cassette Bag in Grass Green).
Featuring a centre front opening accentuated through an adjustable ruched drawstring, Bieber wore the midriff-baring dress with layered gold chains from Fallon Jewellery and a pair of By Far perspex square-toe heels to Nobu Malibu with gal pal Kendall Jenner, with both girls also sporting masks.
With the influential midriffs of Dua Lipa, Candice Swanepoel and now Hailey Bieber behind it, the Ruched Disconnect Shirt Dress has of course sold out, but is available for pre-order on the designer’s website. And considering the barrage of cutaway clothing – or what’s fondly become known as “midriff flossing” – on the Spring 2021 runways, now is the perfect time to invest in fashion’s next big thing.
