When the 2023 Met Gala theme was announced as ‘Karl: A Line Of Beauty’ to honour the late fashion maven Karl Lagerfeld, the style set had only one question: which of Karl’s many muses would take to the steps of the Met to honour his vast legacy.
One obvious choice was Blake Lively, New York’s favourite fictional uptown ‘It girl’ turned off-screen style savant.
Her recent red carpet home runs aside, you were hard-pressed to find Lively in anything other than Lagerfeld-era Chanel during the late noughties, with her ‘model as muse’ relationship with the fashion designer cultivating when they walked arm-in-arm in custom looks at the 2011 Met Gala, themed ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’.
Given her close relationship with the house of Chanel and personal affection for Lagerfeld, her attendance was almost a prerequisite for this year’s soirée; along with the likes of Cara Delevingne and Choupette, of course.
However, in a strangely sartorial coup de théâtre, Lively revealed that she’s skipping this year’s festivities in lieu of watching the red carpet from the comfort of her home. Celebrities are just like us, right?
While attending Tiffany & Co’s star-studded 5th Avenue landmark boutique reopening, Lively confirmed to reporters when probed about her iconic Statue of Liberty Atelier Versace gown from the 2022 gala that she will “be wearing that on my couch on Monday.”
We’re all about dressing for the occasion, but our voyeuristic ensembles will be a little less couture and a little more apt for the locale of our living rooms.
Lively hasn’t disclosed any further information about her attendance, or lack thereof. Still, given that she’s just given birth to her fourth child, perhaps she’s taking every opportunity to savour the newborn bliss with her husband, Ryan Reynolds, and three daughters, James, 8, Inez, 6, and Betty, 3.
The news comes after Hailey Bieber, another Met Gala mainstay, also reportedly confirmed to fans that she’s swapping the first Monday in May to focus on her upcoming Rhode Beauty launch.
Given we have less than 24 hours until the first A-listers, including Dua Lipa and Michaela Coel, to ascend the Met steps in Karl-inspired garms, anticipation is unexpectedly at an all time high.
