The annual Met Gala, AKA fashion’s biggest red carpet event, is set to return to the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art’s steps on the first Monday of May.
Every year since 1971, the Met Gala has been themed with previous notable dress codes including Camp: Notes on Fashion, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, and Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Events have also paid tribute to specific designers, including Alexander McQueen and Rei Kawakubo. For 2023, the Met Gala will be doing just that: centred around the late legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld, named ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’.
Dubbed the ‘Oscars of fashion’, the Met Gala draws in the biggest A-list names, including Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Rihanna and Blake Lively with different celebrities signing on as hosts each year. This year, hosts include British singer Dua Lipa, British actor and director Michaela Cole, actress Penélope Cruz and tennis star Roger Federer.
In terms of how attendees could interpret this year’s theme, Lagerfeld designed for a handful of houses across his career, including Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and his eponymous brand. This means there’s a plethora of archival looks available and the option of wearing modern-day Chanel or Fendi, two houses Lagerfeld oversaw until his death in 2019.
One thing’s for sure, the first Monday in May can’t come soon enough.
