White suits aplenty and still no return of the tie — this year’s red carpet style at the 2022 Emmy Awards continues the push towards making formal attire far less formal.

From the red carpet to the main event, there’s been some expected wins and surprising losses. While Andrew Garfield might have lost out on a win for his role in Under The Banner Of Heaven (to be fair, he lost to Michael Keaton who was incredible in Dopesick) he’s got top billing as far as his suit for the night is concerned. The cream-hued Zegna number was a perfect fit for an evening out on a balmy L.A. night.

In fact, white — and variants of it — was the color of choice for many suits this evening. Succession’s Cousin Greg Nicholas Braun towered in a white Dior suit; Seth Rogen’s streak of style wins continued with his sharply cut suit by Brunello Cucinelli and John Legend — who is expecting another baby with wife Chrissy Teigen — got the Gucci treatment in white.

On the other hand, Severance star Adam Scott arrived looking like he’d just left his high school formal for a better party: floppy fringe, oversized flower and piping on the shirt with a cropped tux. Same vibes with Abbot Elementary’s Chris Perfetti. And Chris O’Donnell’s plain black suit was nice but perhaps a bit corporate. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael’s shirtless-with-a-fur coat approach was…interesting. Still keeping with the evening’s white theme, love it or hate it, it shook up the sea of suits.

But shout out to the old school guys who reminded us of just how good a well-cut tuxedo actually looks: Martin Short and Steve Martin, Ted Lasso stars Phil Dunster and Brett Goldstein; Star Wars rebel and star of the forthcoming Andor, Diego Luna; and Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen.

While not in the evening’s winning color, The Great star Nicholas Hoult and Squid Game’s Lee Jung Jae finish the trifecta with Garfield for the night’s best dressed men. Hoult’s flared take on the tuxedo by Dior and Lee Jung Jae’s studded detailed Gucci suit balanced keeping it fresh while still respecting the evening’s dress code. That’s how ye do it lads!
