Bye Bye, Brows. Beauty Notes from Vivienne Westwood
Pencil thin is in
As Paris Fashion Week — the last stop of fashion month — draws to a close, a few trends have taken over our feeds. On the beauty front, perhaps the most interesting has been the absence of brows. From bleached to skinny, and seen on everyone from the runway to celebs in the front row, it seems the big, bushy brow era is over in favor of something more subdued.
One of the greatest displays was at the Vivienne Westwood Spring 2023 show in Paris. The makeup, directed by the perennially cool Isamaya Ffrench combined powdered skin with nude liner, pops of candy pink and muted red lipstick, as well as skinny, pencilled on brows. Like something from the Great Gatsby, Ffrench concealed natural brows and instead sketched on razor-thin lines just above the natural level. The makeup artist used her own brand, Isamaya Beauty, to create the looks.
As for the hair, director Charlie Le Mindu out forward a mixed back of wet look ’50s finger curls, slick low twists, and quirky shapes like bowl cuts, and lengths smoothed under.
Fun, interesting and with a Westwood signature retro aesthetic, the beauty look was everything that’s great about fashion week. That, and yet another reason for us to sep away from the brow pencil.
