It was dubbed one of the most iconic weddings in recent decades, but Victoria Beckham insists her nuptials to husband David were far more understated than they appeared. “I think that the media glamorized the wedding much more than it actually was,” the star told The Business of Fashion.

The pair married in a memorable ceremony held at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland, complete with two golden thrones that the couple perched on throughout the wedding. But Beckham now says that the event was a far more intimate affair than the subsequent press coverage made it seem.

“Sometimes my tongue-in-cheek sense of humor does tend to get me in trouble, but the wedding wasn’t as huge as everybody made it out [to be],” the star said, adding that she hadn’t been quite prepared for the rampant media speculation that would followed the pair when they first got together.

“I don’t think I realized when I met David quite what the two of us together would be,” Beckham explained. “When you took David in Manchester United and then you took me in the Spice Girls it was huge. I mean everywhere that we went we were followed by fans and paparazzi and constantly being talked about.”

Many were quick to dub the relationship a PR stunt, with Beckham admitting that many speculated that they were “only together to build a brand.” But more than two decades later the couple are still going strong, with Beckham recently dedicating a sweet Instagram post to her football legend husband by wearing a hoodie emblazoned with “All I want for Christmas is David Beckham.”

As for the naysayers, Beckham said, “I’m like, listen, we’ve been married for 25 years now. If I didn’t genuinely love this man — I mean, 25 years is a long, long time,” she added with a laugh.

Here’s to many more years of these two.
