The world’s best hotels have officially been revealed, and if your travel wish list was already getting dangerously long, consider this fair warning.
The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 ranking has just been announced, spotlighting exceptional stays from Paris and Tokyo to Marrakech, Bali and the Italian coast. At the very top is Rosewood Hong Kong, which claimed the No. 1 position for the second consecutive year. But for American travelers, one entry in particular deserves attention: San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California, which landed at No. 22 and is the highest-ranked hotel in the United States.
San Ysidro Ranch Is the Highest-Ranked U.S. Hotel
Tucked into the foothills of Montecito, San Ysidro Ranch feels less like a traditional luxury resort and more like a secret California estate. The historic property is home to just 38 individually designed cottages, surrounded by lush gardens, lavender, bougainvillea and views toward the Santa Ynez Mountains.
Its guest book is almost as impressive as the setting. John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned here in 1953, while Winston Churchill was among the property’s other famous visitors. Today, its cottages combine that old-world character with serious luxury, including fireplaces, private patios and, in many accommodations, outdoor showers and hot tubs.
The Ranch is also particularly known for its privacy — no towering hotel blocks or crowded lobby here — making it the sort of place where disappearing for a few days is essentially the entire point.
Dining is another major draw. The property’s Stonehouse Restaurant occupies a former 19th-century citrus packing house, while the Ranch boasts an extraordinary wine cellar containing thousands of bottles from around the world.
San Ysidro Ranch isn’t technically America’s only appearance in the Top 50. Utah’s spectacular desert retreat Amangiri also made the 2026 ranking at No. 45. Still, with San Ysidro Ranch coming in at No. 22, California can officially claim the highest-ranked hotel in the United States this year.
Elsewhere, the list reads like the ultimate travel bucket list, with Chablé Yucatán in Mexico at No. 9, Rosewood São Paulo at No. 6, Royal Mansour Marrakech at No. 26 and Capella Sydney at No. 16.
