You probably remember Suri as the little girl paparazzi used to photograph on the streets of New York, perched on her famous mother’s hip. For months now, she has been completely off the public radar – no red carpets, no candid city strolls, nothing. So when new photos surfaced of the 20-year-old looking strikingly like a young Katie Holmes, it felt like we were meeting an entirely different person. And in many ways, we are.
A new name, a new chapter
The last time Suri made headlines, it was not for a photo op but for a significant personal decision. In July, reports confirmed that she had officially changed her name from Suri Cruise to Suri Noelle, dropping her last remaining connection to estranged father Tom Cruise. The name Noelle is the middle name she shares with her mother, Katie Holmes, making the choice feel deeply intentional.
That shift is more than symbolic. With a new name comes a clear desire to carve out her own identity, separate from the tabloid narratives that defined her childhood. And now, she is putting that name to work – not in fashion magazines or gossip columns, but on an actual stage.
Summer on stage in Pittsburgh
On August 1, Suri was photographed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, outside of the Trust Arts Education Center. She was not just passing through. The Carnegie Mellon University student was starring in an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, titled Midsummer!, and the photos captured her on the day of the show’s final performance.
Her look that day was effortlessly summery: white, wide-leg pants paired with a purple geometric-patterned tank top, black flats, and small braids woven through her long, brunette hair. It was relaxed, it was her, and it made one thing unmistakable – she is the spitting image of Katie Holmes. We have always known she resembled her mom, but now that she is fully grown, the likeness is almost uncanny.
The fact that she chose to spend her summer break performing in Pittsburgh rather than vacationing elsewhere says a lot. This was not an obligation. It was a choice made during the window between her sophomore and junior years at Carnegie Mellon, and it suggests she is genuinely invested in the craft.
From fashion dreams to the drama school spotlight
Suri’s path to the stage was not a straight line. When she first arrived at Carnegie Mellon University, she was reportedly considering studying fashion. Somewhere along the way, the pull of performance proved stronger, and she decided on the college’s School of Drama, where she is now majoring in musical theatre.
Still, her pivot to musical theatre is not as sudden as it might seem. She already had stage experience before college. As a senior in high school, Suri played Morticia Addams in her school’s production of The Addams Family: The Musical. And her vocal talent was showcased even earlier than that – Holmes featured her daughter’s singing voice in two of her own films, Alone Together and Rare Objects.
So while the formal academic focus on musical theatre may be relatively new, the foundation has been building for years. Could anyone be surprised? With a mother who has spent decades navigating Hollywood, Suri has had a front-row seat to the entertainment industry her entire life. The connections are there, but so is the evident drive to earn her place through actual work – rehearsals, college productions, summer shows in a city far from the celebrity spotlight of New York or Los Angeles.
And the work is already taking her further than Pittsburgh. Her performance in Midsummer! is headed across the Atlantic. Suri is set to perform the show at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the U.K. for the next few weeks, putting her in front of entirely new audiences on one of the world’s most celebrated arts stages.
A career on her own terms
What stands out most about Suri Noelle’s recent reappearance is the quiet confidence of it all. She did not announce her return with a social media blitz or a splashy magazine cover. She simply showed up, performed, and let the work speak for itself. She changed her name on her own terms. She chose her major on her own terms. And now she is building a career – on her own terms.
We knew her as a celebrity kid. Now, at 20, she is becoming a performer in her own right, with a college drama degree in progress, a Shakespearean adaptation under her belt, and an international festival ahead. If this summer is any indication, we will be seeing much more of Suri Noelle on stages in the future – and this time, the spotlight will be one she chose for herself.
