I have something to admit and since this is a safe space, I’m going to get this off my chest… I am a socks-and-sandals apologist. Yup, you read that right. I love a sock styled with a sandal. Hear me out.

In my opinion, hosiery – specifically socks – get overlooked. I’m here to change that narrative. The power of a good sock is game-changing. You can go classic and chic with a cashmere pair styled with slingbacks or lean into the season and rock a cable-knit pair with some sleek loafers. Utilize this accessory with endless options ranging from different colors to textures and patterns that have the ability to elevate any look.

Below, I break down exactly how to incorporate socks into your wardrobe in new and unexpected ways. Happy sock shopping!

Fashion publicist Lilly Sisto is hands-down my favorite account to follow on TikTok. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t go out and buy a Brandy Melville corduroy maxi skirt immediately after watching one of her outfit videos. One of the many things I admire about Sisto is her ability to utilize a great sock. Above, she styled a gray pair with a plaid dress. The best part of this look is Sisto’s choice in footwear. The platform sandals paired with a sock is unexpected and elevated. My favorite It girl of the moment just proved that you can rock a great sock with a plaid dress without looking too “school girl.”

This woman right here taught me the importance of a good sock moment. Julia Gall, fashion editor (and my old boss, Hi Julia!) is one of my biggest style inspirations. When it comes to her work as well as personal style, Gall’s eye and attention to detail is otherworldly. Above, she styled a vampy shoe with a sporty sock. The juxtaposition of the super sexy pump and casual sock feels elevated and fresh.

Like I said before, I am a socks-and-sandals apologist, and a great sock can make any shoe feel seasonally appropriate. Please see the above example. It doesn’t get more summery than a pair of cream sandals. This style of shoe typically makes an appearance four months out of the year and are banished to the back of your closet for the remaining eight. This bold red sock turns a summer sandal into a chic winter option.

[Note to self: take a nice outfit picture in this shoe/sock combo.] Anyways, you can’t talk about a great sock moment without mentioning the current “balletcore” trend. I took inspiration straight from the runway and paired my beloved Miu Miu flats with some slouchy gray socks.
