Via the virtual world of TikTok, Hailey Bieber has become a purveyor of “glazed donut” everything; skin, nails, and last month, “brownie glazed lips.” A term the model and fans began flouting across the internet as a new trend. For the uninitiated, it simply involves lining the lips with a brown pencil before applying a clear lip gloss over the top and blending.

Black and Latina creators were quick to fire back at the trend for cultural appropriation. On Instagram Tajia Reed responded to the trend on September 25 saying in a video, “For black and brown women doing it, we were mocked and ridiculed.” Celebrity makeup artist Sir John — known for painting the face of Beyoncé — has also entered the chat on the topic and broken down exactly why it is so controversial. Speaking to @diet_prada on the matter he opened, “It’s not about Hailey.”

“All you had was a lip liner and a clear gloss back in the day,” he told the social media account. “We had to be creative and try things in an unorthodox way because of the lack of products for Black and Brown people.”

He continued, echoing Reed’s notion, “When it was on my sisters or my mom, and in Black and Latino communities, it was seen as ghetto. Now that it’s on white bodies, it’s seen as ‘fashionable.’” When asked if the technique can be adopted by all, he responded, “Beauty is for everyone. It doesn’t have to be brown, but something two shades deeper than your complexion. The goal is to highlight the silhouette of your lips.”

As for his product recommendations? Sir John says the MAC liner in “Chestnut” was the OG color for women of color while if you have a lighter complexion, something like the “Spice” MAC liner.
