Forget expensive anti-aging serums. Social media has discovered a new beauty obsession: a homemade “natural Botox” gel made with three ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

The recipe combines cloves, bay leaves and aloe vera into a lightweight gel that beauty enthusiasts claim can make skin appear firmer and smoother. It takes around 10 minutes to prepare, but does it actually work?

Why Is Everyone Talking About Natural Botox?

Unlike injectable Botox, which temporarily relaxes facial muscles to reduce wrinkles, homemade skincare treatments cannot prevent muscle contractions or replicate its effects.

However, certain natural ingredients contain antioxidants and moisturizing compounds that may improve the appearance of skin.

The key is managing expectations: this DIY gel might provide temporary hydration and a smoother-looking complexion, but there is no clinical evidence that this particular combination reduces wrinkles.

The Three Ingredients Behind This Viral Beauty Trick

Cloves contain eugenol, a compound known for its antioxidant properties. Although promising in laboratory research, its anti-aging benefits when applied to human skin remain unproven. Cloves can also cause irritation and allergic reactions.

Bay leaves contain plant compounds with antioxidant properties, although evidence supporting their use in anti-aging skincare is limited.

Aloe vera is the most established skincare ingredient of the three. Known for its hydrating and soothing properties, it can temporarily make fine lines appear less noticeable by improving skin hydration.

How to Make the DIY Clove, Bay Leaf and Aloe Vera Gel

The viral recipe calls for:

  • 8–10 whole cloves

  • 2–3 dried bay leaves

  • 150 ml (approximately ⅔ cup) water

  • 2–3 tablespoons pure aloe vera gel

Step 1: Prepare the Infusion

Lightly crush the cloves and bay leaves, then add them to a saucepan with the water. Simmer gently for five to seven minutes before allowing the mixture to cool completely.

Step 2: Mix With Aloe Vera

Strain the infusion and combine a few tablespoons of the liquid with the aloe vera gel. Stir until smooth.

Step 3: Apply With Caution

Although social media recipes recommend applying the mixture to the face, dermatologists have not established that this preparation is safe or effective.

Clove compounds can irritate sensitive skin, and homemade water-based cosmetics without preservatives can develop microbial contamination, even when refrigerated. A patch test does not eliminate these risks.

Can This Natural Botox Alternative Really Reduce Wrinkles?

The short answer is no: there is no reliable evidence that this homemade gel can reduce wrinkles or produce Botox-like results.

Aloe vera may temporarily plump the skin through hydration, but cloves and bay leaves have not been shown to provide comparable anti-aging benefits.

For a safer approach, consider a commercially formulated aloe vera moisturizer, alongside proven skincare essentials such as daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and, where appropriate, retinoids.

The takeaway? Your kitchen might contain useful skincare ingredients, but when it comes to wrinkles, a viral beauty hack is no substitute for evidence-backed treatments.
