Finding a good mascara might seem simple enough, but it can actually be an arduous beauty task. For starters, it needs to be long-wearing, comfortable and flake-free. But then it also needs to appeal to your individual eye makeup sensibilities — do you want length, volume, or a bit of both? A natural finish or something that looks like falsies (in a good way)?

Personally I like long but believable length, clean definition and a subtle curl (nothing thick or spidery). I’ve loved every Rose Inc product since the brand launched last year, so when the Rose Inc Ultra-Black Lash Lift Serum Mascara was released, I was very keen to try it.

The Rose Inc Ultra-Black Lash Lift Serum Mascara described as a “rich, glossy mascara that lengthens, lifts and fortifies lashes.” What’s unique about the formula itself is that it’s boosted with Squalane, Peptides, Argan Oil and Goji Berry Oil to provide some conditioning benefits (this is why it’s referred to as a serum mascara). I’m not really someone who looks for this specifically, but it is a nice consideration – because who doesn’t want long, healthy-looking lashes?

And then there’s the brush! Personally, I think it’s the brush that makes or breaks a mascara. It’s responsible for the application, the curl, length and separation. This one in particular is a plastic dual comb with a subtle C-shaped curve. There’s long bristles on one side to catch and separate lashes, while the other shorter side is great to build volume or apply product to the bottom lash line. According to tips shared on the Rose Inc website, you can also start by using the shorter side at the base of the lashes to build up product from the roots, creating a tight-liner effect. Smart.

My thoughts

Because I like clean length and definition, the look and sound of this came with immediate appeal (comb wand? Tick! Long bristles? Tick! Rosie-approved? Tick). I curled my lashes first – a must – and brushed on a few coats, only letting it dry for a second in between. It didn’t clump or drag, and while it did require some care, the finished effect was long, wispy, and defined, otherwise known as my perfect lash.

I will say it’s a wet formula, so if you have fussy eyes, play sport, or live in a humid environment, I’d maybe steer clear. I think because of the nourishing, oil-based ingredients it has more sheen than your regular mascara, but as long as you don’t come into contact with water/sweat/tears, it’s got great staying power. And the long, fanned out effect is seriously good. See my before and afters below:
