clutch

Quirky clutches had a moment on the red carpet at the 93rd annual Academy Awards, held on Sunday, April 25. Three, in particular, stuck with me and likely will remain at the top of my mind well into the future. Angela Bassett, Erica Rivinoja, and Celeste Waite are among the stars who solidified the eccentric handbag trend as one of the most buzzed-about Oscars fashion moments, each of whom debuted strikingly different designs.

Bassett teamed her red Alberta Ferretti gown with a matching Judith Leiber lip clutch, fully beaded in glimmering Austrian crystals. The Borat Subsequent Moviefilm screenwriter, meanwhile, donned my favorite accessory of the evening: the wildly unexpected Edie Parker Shrimp Cocktail Acrylic Bag, born to match the popular hors d’oeuvre. The creative took off the clutch’s accompanying curb-chain and held it by the side of her form-fitting magenta gown. Unsurprisingly, the accessory didn’t go unnoticed.

Finally, Waite’s anatomically correct human heart-shaped clutch is from Alessandro Michele’s newly unveiled Gucci Aria Fall-Winter 2021 collection, as seen on the runway on April 15 as part of Look 25. The 26-year-old held the crystal-covered accessory bag in her hands, which was a delightful combination of eerie and epic. As for the rest of her outfit, the singer complemented the statement handbag with head-to-toe Gucci; specifically, a custom silk crêpe dress with contrast bead embroidered fringe details and crystal snakehead appliqué.

The heart-shaped Gucci purse isn’t available just yet, but you can shop the designs from Edie Parker and Judith Leiber below.
