Did Louis Not Get His Royal Title?

Did you know that Prince Louis was at risk of not getting the royal title?

Prince Louis obtained his official title at birth only thanks to a reform introduced by Queen Elizabeth II. The youngest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Prince Louis, is probably our favorite royal.

In the past two years, the little one from the Cambridge household has made numerous appearances. His cuteness never failed to charm us every time. From funny faces to tantrums to sweet moments with his mom, Kate, he has always stolen the spotlight from his siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

How Queen Elizabeth Saved Her Great-Grandchild

But there’s something you might not know about him. Due to an old monarchy law, Louis, who turned 5 in April, was at risk of not getting the title of prince when he was born.

As the fourth in line to the throne, his official title is His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Wales. However, Louis must thank his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, for becoming a prince at birth.

In 1917, King George V introduced new guidelines for awarding official titles to members of the royal family. He also determined who was too far down the line of succession to qualify as a prince or princess.

The monarch decided that all the children of the sovereign and all firstborn male grandchildren would automatically become princes.

It was Queen Elizabeth II who changed the law to ensure that Princess Charlotte had a royal title, just like her brother George, and was included in the line of succession.

Without this change, even the youngest child of William and Kate would have been known as Lord Louis, not Prince Louis.
