When we hear the word preppy, what initially comes to mind? I’m sure polo shirts with popped collars, sweater vests, cardigans, and various plaid prints immediately surface. As someone who went to schools that required uniforms until I went to college, and participated in sports like tennis and horseback riding, the preppy aesthetic was without a doubt ingrained into my wardrobe subconscious. As an adult, now free to make my own stylistic choices, I am continually drawn to pieces that evoke my old uniforms and that can only be categorized as preppy. Taking inventory, I’ve realized my closet is unintentionally littered with pleated skirts, plaids, and varsity letter knits.
While preppy style is something I feel personally drawn to, make no mistake that I’m able to acquire these pieces because they are in the market. Designers like Thom Browne and Ralph Lauren have capitalized on fashion’s apparent fascination with preppy for years, making the style a cornerstone trademark of their brands. Other designers have caught on and started to incorporate the trend into more of their collections with a personal twist. Chopova Lowena and Le Kilt are among those who have taken plaid, pleated skirts from schoolgirl prep to ultimate chic. Fall Winter 2021 collections decidedly said that the preppy trend wasn’t going anywhere and was in fact, reinforced with fresher takes on what can be interpreted as unoriginal and boring.
