It wasn’t vintage, but Penélope Cruz’s stunning Chanel Oscars gown had a distinctly nostalgic feel to it.

Cruz arrived at the 92nd Academy Awards in a spectacular custom black silk-satin dress by Chanel, which featured a fitted bodice, pearl belt, black bow, white camellia corsage (a symbol of the House) and sculptural full skirt which was longer at the back.

The epitome of sophistication, the black gown was in fact an homage to Chanel’s iconic 1995 Haute Couture collection (both Summer and Winter), riffing the collection’s black and white palette, pearl details, black bows, camellia brooches and use of tulle, with Cruz’s modern iteration featuring a flash of black tulle which peeked out beneath its bubbled duchess satin hem.

First modeled by the likes of Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer and Karen Mulder in 1995, Penelope Cruz’s 2020 Oscars dress reimagined Karl Lagerfeld’s couture collection with the deft savoir faire it deserved. The Spanish actress accessorized the gown with retro-inspired pumps and a Chanel bag, plus a hefty dose of diamonds (of course).

A GRAZIA favorite of the night, the look was an example of how the past continues to inform fashion – and brilliantly so.
