Paris Hilton surprised fans when she announced the birth of her first child, son Phoenix, but no one was more surprised than her own family — who was also kept in the dark until after he was born.
A month after her first baby with husband Carter Reum was born, Hilton announced on her iHeartRadio podcast, This Is Paris that “not even my mom, or my sister, my best friends, no one knew until he was like over a week old.” Now in a new interview with Rolling Stone, she revealed that when she finally was ready to break the news to her mom Kathy Hilton, she wanted to do it gently. And what better way to ease the blow than with a little Chanel? (We are talking about the Hiltons, after all!)
“I was like, if I give her Chanel first, maybe she won’t be so upset that I didn’t tell her about this,” Paris said of the blue handbag she gifted Kathy. “I was holding the baby on my shoulder with a blanket over him, and then I just sat down. She’s like, ‘What is that?’ And I was like, ‘A baby … meet your grandson.’ She’s like, ‘Is this yours?’ And she starts crying. She’s like, ‘Let me hold him. He’s the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen in my life. Oh, he’s so beautiful.’ She was just in tears.”
Kathy has since shared photos of Phoenix on Instagram, writing, “My husband Rick and I are so overwhelmed & filled with joy to share our newest grandson, Phoenix Barron Hilton Reum. We are so thrilled for Paris & Carter & look forward to all the happy memories we will make as a family.”
She also posed for photos with Paris and Phoenix writing, “From Paris to Phoenix, home is where the heart is and my ❤️ is right here with these two. 🥰.”
Guess that Chanel did the trick!
In January, Paris announced the birth of her son on Instagram, sharing a close-up photo of her baby’s hand wrapped around her finger with a blue emoji and the caption, “You are already loved beyond words 
.”
People confirmed that the couple welcomed their baby via surrogate, and has been open about wanting children. She talked freely about the IVF process and said it was friend Kim Kardashian (who welcomed two of her four children via surrogate) who first educated Hilton on the process. “I didn’t even know anything about it,” Hilton said on the podcast, The Trend Reporter with Mara in January 2021, “I’m happy that she told me that advice and introduced me to her doctor.”
