Perhaps one of the most popular topics of late to discuss over Zoom cocktails is the wildly impressive oil painting Kim Kardashian’s daughter, North West, presumably created. It’s a subject running rampant on social media and polarizing fans of the famed mother-daughter duo. Critics refuse to believe a seven-year-old created the Bob Ross-style painting, while others are making a strong case for the young girl’s artistic skills.

If you’re new to the oil painting controversy, let’s back up. The KKW Beauty founder shared a photo of her daughter’s artwork to her Instagram story on Monday, February 8. As a text overlay on the photo of the child, she wrote, “My little artist North.” When Kardashian caught wind of critic speculation, she posted a lengthy defense on social media.

“Don’t play with me when it comes to my children!!!” Kardashian wrote. “My daughter and her best friend have been taking a serious oil painting class where their talents and creativity are being encouraged and nurtured. North worked incredibly hard on her painting, which took several weeks to complete. As a proud mom, I wanted to share her work with everyone.”

Tracy Romulus, the mother of West’s friend, also defended West’s artwork in a statement made on her Instagram Story. “Both girls are in art class together and learning oil painting techniques from an instructor,” she wrote. “They spend weeks at a time on a single painting and are incredibly proud of themselves once they complete a project.”

As someone who used to dabble in art class despite being unable to draw anything but stick figures, Romulus is right-on with her statement. Painting instructors help their students create the best possible version of their painting over weeks, months, or years. So while West didn’t exactly gather up supplies and bring the oil painting to life independently, she probably did do a majority of the work with her teacher’s tutelage.

A select few social media users have also come to West’s defense. One of the most popular videos is by TikTok user, Camryn Fred, the daughter of the art teacher that taught North and Ryan. She shared a selfie in front of the same painting the young artists created. “My mom taught me how to do this, and she taught North how to do the same one two weeks ago,” Fred explained in the video. “She’s been an art teacher for 30 years, and everyone who comes to her classes goes through this exact same painting when they’re starting out.”

With over 100,000 views and counting, the video is undoubtedly convincing people that West did, in fact, paint the landscape art. “How are people questioning this when there’s kids playing the piano like concert artists, Elit gymnast, incredible singers…? Kids are amazing!” another TikTok user commented. Another wrote, “The justice North needed.”

No matter where you stand on the popular topic, we’ll leave you with the words of Kardashian herself in response to the negativity surrounding her daughter’s painting: “Please stop embarrassing yourselves with the negativity and allow every child to be GREAT!”
