In exciting news, the film industry is set to be blessed with another female-led and directed film. Nicola Peltz, known for Transformers: Age of Extinction and Bates Motel, is set to write and co-direct alongside Bria Vinaite (The Florida Project) for new indie Drama, Lola James.

According to Deadline, the period film will be set in 2002 and tell the story of 19-year-old protagonist, Lola, as she desperately tries to find a way to get her younger brother, Arlo, out of their toxic home situation. At the same time, Lola is fighting a drug addiction. Things take a turn for the worse when a tragic event sets the course of their lives spinning and changes everything.

Producer nominated actress Virginia Madsen (who starred in Sideways) is also linked to the project in the role of ‘Mona,’ a matriarchal character who struggles with her own trauma and abusive past. Will McCance (from Bernard and Huey) and Ryan Kirby (from Four Good Days and Five Points) are set to produce the feature.

Vinaite brings experience from her acting debut, The Florida Project, which follows themes similar to Lola James. It tells the story of the struggles of poverty and homelessness for a young mother and her children who live in a motel.

Lola James is currently in production in Los Angeles.

The inception of Lola James follows a recent trend of female directors receiving widespread acclaim for telling gritty and realistic stories authentically. However, when it comes to awards season, these women have historically been snubbed in favor of their male counterparts. The Golden Globes is just one institution that has come under fire for habitually disregarding great cinema with women at the directorial helm, most notably Michaela Coel’s television series, I May Destroy You.
