The Morning Show is finally back on our screens and while we were instantly hooked by the plot, we found ourselves equally as enthralled by the impressively coiffed hair, as sported by rival co-news anchors Alex Levy and Bradley Jackson (played by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, respectively).
With the round, 90s-esque blow dry now trending again, bouncy locks à la the local news anchor feels like fresh fodder for hair styling inspiration (yes, we’ve really been in lockdown that long).
Even Aniston enjoys the look both on and off-camera, recently posting a video of herself flipping and fluffing her locks to achieve “anchor hair” on Instagram. And if the initial purveyor of The Rachel is into anchor hair, then we are too.
“The traditional news anchor look will always be a polished, semi-voluminous blow-out, that looks effortlessly fabulous,” explains ghd Creative Stylist Natalie Anne, who is also the founder of Sydney’s Natalie Anne Salon.
“The look is definitely coming back as it is super easy to do at home, is ready-to-wear and versatile, will suit almost any outfit and flatters most face shapes. It’s a classic look that transitions easily from day to night or casual to dressy.”
If you’re imagining the look as the hardened hairspray helmets that many news anchors sported several decades back, you’ll be please to know the modern anchor hairstyle is far more relaxed. Now the style contains much more movement and body, while still maintaining polish.
“Anchor hair is known to be quite natural-looking, so stay away from using too much product,” advises Natalie Anne, suggesting that the focus should be on nixing fly-aways rather than keeping the hair in place.
“Keep a ghd narrow dressing brush handy to smooth and polish your hair with ghd’s Perfect Ending Hairspray,” she suggests.
Here’s Natalie Anne’s guide to getting full-bodied, anchor-inspired locks at home:
- Prepare your wet hair always using a ghd Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray ($35).
- Blow dry using a large round brush, over-directing to create more volume. Tuck in the ends or flick them out to suit your desired shape.
- After blow drying, secure each one-inch section with either a setting pin or a velcro roller to allow the curl to cool down in its shape. This encourages longevity and shape-hold.
- Remove all your pins or rollers. Brush your hair lightly, using a dressing brush, into your preferred shape.
- Using a teasing comb with either ghd’s Perfect Ending Hairspray ($25) or a volumizing powder, backcomb the crown area for more height
- Polish down any fly-aways using ghd’s Shiny Ever After Shine Spray ($35) and a small brush (tip – makeup brushes or toothbrushes work perfectly!).
She also suggests dressing anchor hair up for evening with hair accoutrements. “To transition from day to night, or from office to party, add a couple of cute pins or accessories!”
