Tennis champion Naomi Osaka shocked the world when she withdrew from the 2023 Australian Open a week before the event was due to begin. At the time, Osaka didn’t provide a reason for her sudden absence, prompting speculation about what caused such a sudden change. However, the 25-year-old is now ready to share what prompted her decision on her own terms, and it’s a good one: she’s about to become a mother.
On Instagram, the 25-year-old shared a photo announcing she’s pregnant with her first child with her boyfriend, rapper Cordae. Sharing a photo of a screen showing an ultrasound scan to her millions of followers on Instagram and Twitter, Osaka wrote, “Can’t wait to get back on the court but here’s a little life update for 2023.”
In a second slide, Osaka went on to write that the past few years have been challenging and that taking months away from the court has given her a “new love and dedication for the game I’ve dedicated my life to.”
“I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future,” she continued, writing, “one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone ‘that’s my mom.'”
At the end of her personal note to fans, Osaka wrote that she intends to be back on the court for the 2024 Australian Open. If the event takes place at its normal time, Osaka, who didn’t revel how far along she is in her pregnancy, would have roughly a year from today to train and get back on the court.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
