We’ve seen the likes of Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid embrace the trend, but now Miley Cyrus has updated her edgy mullet with a new two-tone hair color. After rocking a blonde shaggy cut for the better part of two years, Cyrus switched things up by adding contrasting black streaks through her platinum locks.

The Midnight Sky singer debuted the fresh new look on The Tonight Show, where she performed in a slinky black jumpsuit with stacks of gold jewellery. The dark streaks ran from the singers roots right down to her fringe and spliced through the lengths of her hair.

Although Cyrus’ new color feels very on-trend with the styles we’re seeing today, there was also something distinctly Noughties about the dark streaks, which were chunkier in some sections of her hair than others. It felt very Dirrty-era Christina Aguilera, or perhaps the multi-hued streaks made famous by Avril Lavigne in the early 2000s.

While others have experimented with acid brights when it comes to two-tone hair, Cyrus kept it mono-hued, resulting in a subdued, more wearable take on Cruella DeVil’s signature black and white hair color.

Cyrus was clearly in her element during her appearance on the show, where she serenaded friend Pete Davidson with a rendition of Yvonne Fair’s classic track It Should Have Been Me.

Cyrus even made several cheeky references to Davidson’s rumored romance with Kim Kardashian while performing the track. “Pete Davidson, this song is for you,” she said, before referencing the now-iconic photos of the pair together.

“When I saw those photos, this is what I played,” she joked.
