In June, Miley Cyrus announced that she had been sober for six months, ditching both drugs and alcohol to live a healthy lifestyle alongside her then-boyfriend Cody Simpson.

But in a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, the singer revealed that she’s now two weeks sober after she “fell off” her sobriety in recent months – a road bump she says was likely due to the global pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, stresses, and anxieties.

“Well, I, like a lot of people, being completely honest, during the pandemic fell off … I would never sit here and go, ‘I’ve been fucking sober’… I fell off and I realized that I now am back on sobriety, two weeks sober, and I feel like I really accepted that time,” Cyrus told Lowe.

The 28-year-old added that instead of getting upset with herself, she’s instead reflecting and trying to use the mistake as a way to learn and move forward. “One of the things I’ve used is ‘Don’t get furious, get curious.’ So don’t be mad at yourself, but ask yourself, ‘What happened?'” she explained.

Despite going public with her sobriety journey in June, Cryus says she “didn’t choose to make a statement” when she recently broke her streak. “To me, it was a fuck up because I’m not a moderation person, and I don’t think that everyone has to be fucking sober,” she said. “I think everyone has to do what is best for them.”

Cyrus went on to explain her relationship with alcohol, saying, “I don’t have a problem with drinking. I have a problem with the decisions I make once I go past that level of … Even into, I’ve just been wanting to wake up 100%, 100% of the time.”

She also revealed that a fear of joining ‘the 27 club’ prompted her to clean up her act. “Twenty-seven to me was a year that I really had to protect myself. That actually really made me want to get sober, because we’ve lost so many icons at 27,” she said. “It’s a very pivotal time. You go into that next chapter or this is it for you. I just feel that some of the artists that almost couldn’t handle their own power and their own energy and their own force. It’s an energy. I, no matter what, was born with that.”

Thankfully, Cyrus is very disciplined when she wants to be – something we’ve seen firsthand with her career goals and exercise regime that resulted in her incredibly strong and toned body. “I’m very disciplined,” she said. “That’s why it’s never easy, but it’s pretty easy for me to be sober or in and out of sobriety because it’s like the day I don’t want to fucking do it anymore, I don’t. The day that I do, I do. You know? But when I don’t want to, it just is. I’m just very disciplined.”

Cyrus ended her marriage to Liam Hemsworth in August of 2019 and went on to date musician Cody Simpson until August 2020 when they split after 10 months of dating. At the time, E! News reported the pair had different goals and decided to go their separate ways, but given Cyrus’ sobriety, Simpson’s interest in partying likely played a part, too.

“Cody felt like he was in a different place and wanted to be single. Miley started to get busy working on new music and their relationship fizzled out,” a source told the publication. “Nothing bad happened, and they still respect each other. Miley has expressed she wants to be single for a while. Cody has taken more interest in partying and being around a lot of friends and Miley’s not into that right now.”
