Like a balloon drop on a crowded dance floor, Michaela Jaé “Mj” Rodriguez has unleashed her first single, “Something to Say,” and we’re convinced it just might be a contender for the title of this year’s Song of Summer.
The song’s message, according to Rodriguez, is all about unity. “This song is for everyone around the world, for them to stop, look around and see how we have more in common than we actually realize,” she says. “To stand up for what we believe. To embrace one another’s differences. Let’s stand for love! We are one!”
And nothing brings people together like a good song! With its twangy guitar riffs, caramel-smooth bass and joyful brass section, the retro-flavored bop hearkens back to Cheryl Lynn and Earth, Wind & Fire — which is no surprise since the group’s bassist Verdine White is one of the song’s co-writers. It’s the kind of track Rodriguez’s character Blanca might have grooved to while cooking dinner for the unruly children of the house of Evangelista on the 1980s and early ’90s set Pose. It’s also perfect for your poolside playlist.
It’s hard to believe that just a couple days ago, we were reading about Rodriguez telling a group of fellow actors at The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Drama Actress Roundtable that she had been worried about getting another role once Pose wrapped its third and final season. Even as opportunities for Black and brown trans people increase in the entertainment business, wondering whether the next gig will come along has got to be stressful. Clearly, Rodriguez needn’t have worried. Last month, it was announced that she’ll star alongside Maya Rudolph in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy Loot. And with the release of “Something to Say,” the multi-talented performer has begun carving out yet another new role for herself: pop star.
