Matthieu Blazy
Bottega Veneta new creative director, Matthieu Blazy.

When referring to #newbottega, Matthieu Blazy is the designer to note. Only five days after Bottega Veneta announced the surprising exit of creative director Daniel Lee (with only mere speculation of what was to come next), Kering has announced that Matthieu Blazy is assuming the role of creative director at Bottega Veneta.

Last week’s news came as a complete shock after Lee served three successful years at the helm of the Italian luxury fashion house. However, Blazy’s appointment as creative director doesn’t come as much of a shock to the fashion world. Blazy’s resume includes design roles at mega fashion houses including Raf Simons, Maison Martin Margiela, Céline, and of course, Bottega Veneta where he served as Lee’s right-hand man as ready-to-wear design director.  Kering is known for (and has had great success, see: Alessandro Michele at Gucci) with moving up designers from behind the scenes, so naturally Blazy’s promotion was in his line of sight.

“Matthieu Blazy is an extraordinarily talented individual, whom I am proud and excited to entrust with the creative helm of our luxury House,” says the CEO of Bottega Veneta Leo Rongone. “Bottega Veneta has always been equated with signature craftsmanship and distinctive creativity. Matthieu’s appointment will further enhance the modern relevance of our brand and accelerate our growth while preserving the values that are at the core of Bottega Veneta.”

“The very solid foundations, specific codes, and unique identity of Bottega Veneta enable us to nurture great ambitions for the future of this luxury House.” says François-Henri Pinault, Chairman & CEO of Kering “I am confident that Matthieu Blazy’s wealth of experience and broad cultural background will allow him to bring his creative impetus to the task of carrying on the legacy of Bottega Veneta.”

All eyes will be kept peeled this upcoming Fall-Winter 22 Fashion week as Matthieu Blazy will present his first collection for Bottega Veneta in February 2022. We can only hope that everyone’s favorite  “Bottega Green” will be carried on in Blazy’s Bottega Veneta era.
