I was scrolling through Instagram when I came across a photo of a pup wearing a gold necklace featuring a bone-shaped pendant inscribed with the Balenciaga logo. The luxury Spanish fashion label posted the photo to its Instagram feed, without a caption or even a tag for us to further explore the canine’s impressive street style. Nevertheless, the pic was a friendly little reminder that even though the world is still fighting a global health crisis, we always, thankfully, have dogs—fashionable ones, at that.
Despite the lack of context, the timing of this post felt right, as dog adoption and sales have soared as people continue to self-isolate at home amid the COVID-19 pandemic. More time out of the office means more time to raise (and spoil) a special pup. I am among those who’ve contributed to these spiking statistics, and I must admit that it’s one of the few good things to come out of social distancing. His accessory collection is small, but we’re working on it and taking notes from dog influencers like the unnamed Balenciaga pup.
According to Balenciaga’s website, the luxury fashion house technically designed the aforementioned necklace for humans. But it’s hard to argue that it doesn’t look like it was made for the pup. Suddenly, we see a white space in the fashion industry for adjustable accessories for humans and their four-legged friends.
So do dogs have a place in high fashion? Well, whether you know it or not, some fabulous canines have the coveted job of high fashion models, as seen on the runways of Moncler and Tod’s. And while fashion houses are usually pretty low-key about promoting their dog accessories compared to silhouettes for humans, they surely exist among labels like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Versace (just to name a few).
