One-of-a-kind fashion launches always pique our interest, but Louis Vuitton’s upcoming auction with Sotheby’s immediately made us stop to read more. The two renowned leaders in the realms of art and luxury are joining forces for a special (and very fashionable) charity auction.
On June 28, Sotheby’s will auction 22 unique and exceptionally remade Louis Vuitton Artycapucines bags, with proceeds benefitting a diverse range of charitable organizations and NGOs.
The 22 artists who participated in designing a unique take on the brand’s iconic Capucines bag include Amélie Bertrand, Daniel Buren, Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Gregor Hildebrandt, Donna Huanca, Huang Yuxing, Alex Israel, Liu Wei, Peter Marino, Beatriz Milhazes, Vik Muniz, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Park Seo-Bo, Paola Pivi, Ugo Rondinone, Tschabalala Self, Josh Smith, Jonas Wood, Kennedy Yanko, Zeng Fanzhi and Zhao Zhao. Like other limited-edition versions of the brand’s Artycapucines bag, exceptional savoir-faire and materials were used in the intricate process, which requires painstaking time-intensive artisanal techniques.
The artists all signed their name under the flap and each bag comes in a monogram-covered Louis Vuitton Boîte Chapeau, a hat box based on a design first launched by the Maison in 1924, also signed by the artists. Each creative visionary chose which charity the proceeds from their bag will support, ranging from poverty reduction, disaster relief, education and refugee rights to name a few notable causes.
The Artycapucines collection continues Louis Vuitton’s close relationship with the arts, which dates back nearly a century when Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the Maison’s founder’s grandson, began commissioning artists to create store windows and artwork for Louis Vuitton boutiques. Embracing this legacy of public artistic collaborations, all 22 bags will be publicly exhibited from July 1 to July 5 at Sotheby’s Paris headquarters on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.
Ever since 2019, four Artycapucines collections are released annually, highlighting the creativity of leading contemporary artists who bring their unique visions into the limelight and onto the iconic Capucines bag.
The Louis Vuitton and Sotheby’s Artycapucines auction will be open for online bidding between June 28 through July 12 at sothebys.com.
