Lady Gaga has been photographed on the set of Joker: Folie à Deux for the first time. Over the weekend, New York City transformed into Gotham City as filming progressed on director Todd Phillips’ forthcoming sequel to his 2019 blockbuster hit Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix. Fans have theorized which lucky actress would wind up playing opposite the Oscar-winner’s crazed comic book villain. While Gaga’s role has yet to be confirmed, it’s been rumored she’s portraying a spin on the beloved antiheroine Harley Quinn.

Gaga was seen making her way through a large crowd of protestors and onlookers as Gotham police officers escorted her out of a government building. The actress wore a bright red jacket with clown-like layered tulle-trimmed sleeves over a black-and-white diamond printed corset, plus ripped black diamond-patterned stockings under a skirt and black high-heeled ankle booties.

Gaga’s platinum blonde hair was slicked back, showcasing her darker roots, and she sported Harlequin-inspired makeup, with diamond shapes around both eyes, an especially pale complexion and cherry red lipstick.

Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips is working on the project. She’s known for her work in Don’t Worry Darling, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals.

Lady Gaga was also seen in a more mainstream everyday look in a blue, purple and white floral dress, layered under a beige knit sweater and a fluffy black coat. She wore the same ripped stockings, black Mary Jane heels and a brown leather boho bag. She didn’t sport the theatrical makeup, and her hair was styled in a simple half-up-half-down ‘do. In photos, her character plants a kiss on one of the protesters in the crowd who held up a newspaper featuring a photo of Gaga’s character’s mugshot and Phoenix’s Joker with the headline “Crazy in Love.”

Last month, Gaga and Phillips shared an official image of the actress face-to-face with Phoenix on Instagram. Gaga confirmed her casting in August, posting a promotional teaser to her social media platforms. The black and red video plays to the tune of “Cheek to Cheek,” which Gaga has covered alongside her close collaborator Tony Bennett.

Gaga has displayed her acting chops in recent years, with stellar performances in American Horror StoryA Star Is Born, and House of Gucci, but there may be another reason why Gaga was the perfect fit for the role of Harley Quinn (previously portrayed by Margot Robbie) — Joker: Folie à Deux will be set in a musical format.

Once Phillips shared the screenplay’s cover, revealing the title back in June, fans quickly gathered ideas surrounding the plot. Since the phrase Folie à Deux refers to a shared psychological disorder, many suspect the sequel to revolve around Joker’s tumultuous romance with his psychiatrist Harley Quinn.

According to classic DC canon, Harley Quinn meets Arthur Fleck (a.k.a. the Joker) during his stay at Arkham Asylum, where she becomes uncontrollably infatuated with her patient.

While the 2019 film shared some insight into the origin story of Batman’s arch-nemesis, Joker 2 will hopefully display the chaotic relationship between Phoenix’s Fleck and Gaga’s Harley Quinn.

Joker: Folie à Deux is set for an October 4, 2024 release.
