Dua Lipa has been named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2021. Following the 2020 release of her latest album, Future Nostalgia, the artist has garnered overwhelming success. The honor arrived this week via a passage penned by Australian popstar, Kylie Minogue ,who described the young artist as a “shining star.”
“Dua Lipa is a shining star, blazing a dazzling trail through the pop cosmos. Just under four years ago, she released the first of her two albums. Today, she is dancing hand in hand with the zeitgeist, having carved with laser-like precision her place in the cultural landscape.”
The Australian 90s icon goes on to explain her first meeting with Lipa during the Studio 2054-streamed concert in late November, 2020. Minogue praised her work ethic and “clever songwriting.”
“Her achievements are all the more remarkable given that she is 25 years of age. She’s kind, cool and smart. She’s a bona fide pop behemoth. And I, like millions of others, look forward to more, and even more, from La Lipa,” Minogue continued.
Lipa took to Instagram following the cover reveal – draped in a hot pink number styled by Lorenzo Posocco – to thank Minogue. “Thank you @time and @kylieminogue for your kind words. A true honor being on the cover #Time100Next.” she wrote.
The “Don’t Start Now” artist also joins poet, Amanda Gorman, who recently recited at President Joe Biden’s Inauguration in the TIME100 Next list. Hamilton star and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda, honored Gorman, recounting the first time he heard the 22-year-old speak.
“‘What was the poet’s name?’ ‘Who was that incredible young woman?'” writes Miranda.
“I’ll never forget hearing those questions roll through the audience of the Geffen Playhouse in 2018 when Amanda Gorman stepped off the stage. It was a star-studded Hollywood fundraiser for arts and education programs, a night full of boldface names. But as Amanda delivered her tightrope-taut verse with impossible poise, the room was hers. Sitting in the second row that night, I became a fan for life.”
Gorman responded on Instagram, also relaying the first time she met Miranda.
“Proud to be in the #TIME100NEXT list! This @Lin_Manuel intro is such a gift. When we first met years ago, I shoved a poem into his hands & said “I’m too nervous to speak but this is what I’d say to you if I could!” He hugged me & said he’d keep it to say he knew me when. Look at us now. Thanks @time for including me among such an amazing list of emerging leaders,” she wrote.
