Love or hate her, Kristen Stewart has been cast in some of the most successful Hollywood hits. Her latest role, however, could the most fascinating yet as she prepares to portray Princess Diana. Today, Variety shared a first look at director Pablo Larrain’s biopic, ‘Spencer.’ The forthcoming film has begun production with images of the young royal flooding the internet.
Stewart is almost unrecognizable as she dons a hat, red coat and black pussy bow blouse. The look draws direct inspiration from an image of Princess Diana on Christmas Day in 1993.
Spencer follows just one weekend in the life of Diana as she spends the Christmas holiday with the Royal Family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. This is said to be the moment Diana chose to leave Prince Charles.
“Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” Stewart says. “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
The cast also features BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall, Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins and Sean Harris best known for his role in Mission: Impossible. Filming is taking place in Germany and the UK according to the publication with the film’s release slated for Fall 2021. Our fingers and toes are crossed following cinematic delays which have been felt across the industry.
2022 marks the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.
Stewart was recently praised for her role as Abby in Happiest Season. The 2020 Christmas film follows a young woman with a plan to propose to her girlfriend. What she is yet to learn is that she hasn’t come out to her family.
