With projects such as Being Serena (2018), Venus and Serena (2013) and a brand new documentary set to be released soon, it feels as though Venus and Serena Williams are the nation’s big sisters. But when it comes to their father and legendary tennis coach, Richard Williams, his story is yet to be fully discovered. That is, until now.

Today, Warner Bros. released the first trailer to King Richard, a film that follows the journey of an undeterred father, instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time. Who can fill the impossibly large shoes of the sports figure? Two-time Oscar nominee, Will Smith, of course. The Pursuit of Happyness star will appear alongside Saniyaa Sidney (“Hidden Figures,” “Fences”) as Venus Williams and Demi Singleton (“Godfather of Harlem”) as Serena Williams.

“Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons,” the official synopsis reads. “The profoundly moving film shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.”

“This world ain’t never had no respect for Richard Williams,” he tells his daughters in the trailer. “But they’re going to respect y’all.”

Oscar-winning filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green has directed the film with a script by Zach Baylin. The cast also features Aunjanue Ellis, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, and Dylan McDermott. With so much talent could this be an award season contendor? If the trailer is anything to go by, perhaps.

King Richard will release into cinemas from November, 2021. The film will also be available to stream on HBO Max for 31 days following its theatrical release. Watch the trailer below.
