As most parents can probably attest, the Christmas ‘elf on the shelf’ tradition is a wonderful, heartwarming idea – in theory. But after a solid week or two of moving small statues to new surfaces around the house each day, most parents have well and truly lost all festive spirit.

Kim Kardashian West is one such parent who has exhausted all elf and shelf-related enthusiasm, but what is a mother to do with 10 days left on the Christmas countdown calendar? Invent an irrefutable excuse, evidently.

As she shared on her Instagram Story, Kardashian-West decided to put her elf collection into quarantine until Christmas Day – and honestly, it’s equal parts genius and relatable. “I can’t take it anymore!!! Our elves are in quarantine. I keep forgetting to move them! I need a break,” she captioned the video.

The Skims founder explained further, “OK, so I couldn’t take it anymore because I forgot to move the elves one night. So, guess who is in quarantine for 10 days helping out right before Christmas? This gives mom a 10-day break. I hope they roll with it because I’m just tired and I can’t remember to move four elves every single night… [so] our elves have COVID.”

The mother of four wrote her children an accompanying note to explain the elves’ sudden isolation, writing, “Dear North, Saint, Chi & Psalm, We are on a 10 Day Quarantine! We still have our magic and will be back to flying around in 10 days!”

It’s not the first Christmas tradition the family have side-stepped this holiday season. The infamously star-studded Kardashian-Jenner Christmas Eve bash has also been canceled, according to sister Khloé. “The COVID cases are getting out of control in CA. So we decided that we’re not doing a Christmas Eve party this year,” she tweeted last week. “It’s the first time we will not be having a Christmas Eve party since 1978 I believe. Health and safety first though! Taking this pandemic seriously is a must.”
